EXCERPT from Kestra’s Short Story: Point of No Return
Doc pulled herself along the corridor railing, heading towards the Evac slots. “Why they can’t just call them toilets, I’ll never know.”
Pu’uala smiled. “’Toilet’ would set up an expectation of something like home.”
“Yeah, I guess our fittings and hoses aren’t much like home.”
“Nope, not at all. Captain wants a PNR celebration tonight; I’ve got to get prep underway. BTW, thanks for the serum. I don’t expect to need it, but glad you were able to concoct it.”
Doc let go of the railing and floated up close. “I’m really not happy about that. You owe me.”
Pu’uala planted a kiss on her cheek. “I know, doll. And I expect you to collect.”
Doc headed toward Elon’s chamber. As the mission leader, he had overall responsibility for all aspects of the project and kept in close contact with Base Command, Doc knew. He was also her lover. She glanced up and down the passageway, and saw Trask, one of the mission specialists, turning the corner and moving out of view. Objectively, she knew it was almost impossible that her liaison with Elon was not known to the rest of the crew, but she chose to try and observe some propriety. They had been secretly together before the flight, Elon not wanting to leave his well-heeled wife before departure. Now, without an expectation of return to Earth, Elon considered himself single. Almost Talmudic in reasoning. She knocked, then pushed into his area.
“Katrina, this is a pleasant surprise.” Elon eased back from his console, and slid the hood shut.
“I had some time…”
“And we should put it to good use.”
